IEC 61508

The IEC 61508 Standard was developed by the International Electro-technical Commission, the international standards and conformity assessment body for Electro-technology.

The IEC 61508 Standard is specific to the functional safety of electrical/electronic and programmable electronic systems. This standard has safety levels or specifically safety integrity levels (SIL's) from 1 to 4 (4 being the highest).

The IEC 61508 Standard is published in seven chapters with the first four chapters defining the way to comply with the specification and the last three chapters providing recommendations to comply with the IEC 61508 Standard.

SIA work with the IEC 61508 Standard in a broad variety of safety critical systems including Emergency Shutdown Systems, Turbine Control Systems including SIL determination and classifications.
